  • Introducing... Zalto Glassware 18/08/2017

    Zalto Glassware

We are now so delighted to be able to offer the incredible Zalto “Denk-Art” wine glasses and decanters.

This is an amazing new range of mouth-blown Austrian glasses and decanters of a quality we have never before encountered. The remarkably beautiful Zalto glasses are made from lead-free crystal which results in a surreal lightness and a surprising durability. They rarely cloud despite repeated dishwasher usage and they are very flexible (the secret to their surprising strength). Dishwasher safe and strong = a win in our books!

These are not simply objects d’art to be admired from a distance but are also very functional glasses that can be used every day.

Which is a must for us!

From the moment you pick up a Zalto glass, the beauty, the finesse and the balance of the glass in the hand speaks of the quality of the craftsmanship and the lead-free crystal from which they are made. They are wonderful glasses to taste from as they were designed specifically for this purpose by Austrian wine expert Hans Denk, who started with a vision to produce the ultimate wine tasting glasses.

When designing the glasses Denk came upon the idea of utilising the same angles of the tilt of earth’s axis which resulted in a range of glasses that were not only strikingly original to look at but also allowed a very wide bowl width. This in turn enables the optimum surface space for a particular style of wine. The angular shape of the glasses also means that if a Zalto glass is knocked over, it tends to hit the strongest part of the glass first. A genius move if you ask us!

Jancis Robinson: “... my current favourite glasses have taken me into a whole new territory of sensual pleasure. Zalto glasses…are hand-blown, do not contain lead oxide so do not get cloudy, and combine an angular bowl shape with the thinnest glass I have yet come across.”

In December 2009 Stern magazine of Germany, conducted the most comprehensive and independent testing thus far of the world’s finest wine stemware. They invited the majority of the world’s quality glassware producers to submit their finest glasses and to join the professional judging panel. This subsequently included key representatives from all the glassware producers including George Riedel himself. The testing was in ‘blind’ conditions with judges both blindfolded and wearing gloves. The whole exercise was overseen by a high magistrate that had taken time from the bench to ensure the proceedings were fair and balanced. The judges tasted three wines out of 10 different glasses and the results were conclusive; Zalto glasses came first in all three wine style categories.

We recommend these beautiful glasses, carafes and decanters to you without reservation. They are certainly the finest glassware that we have encountered.

You'll find them in our Wine Store

  • Time to order the bubbles... 13/11/2016

It's almost Christmas... and you know what that means

*Champagne ~ Sparkling White ~ Sparkling Red*

Here are our picks for Christmas 2016

    2016.11.13 Bubbles For Christmas

Arras Elite is Australia's best Sparkling Wine, hands down. Made by the King of Australian Sparkling, Mr Ed Carr from premium Tasmanian grapes. Arras is our favourite Australian bubbles and the perfect party pop. New to Wine Please and Australia in fact, is the gorgeous Arbeaumont Champagne. Just as delicious as it is pretty, this is a classic French Champagne in stunning art deco dress. It's made to celebrate with fun, frivolity and friends this festive season!

Bringing a bit of blush to the bubbles party are the Chandon Rose and Majella Sparkling Shiraz. The Chandon is a gorgeous pink and the perfect tipple for any occasion. Serve with canapes or dessert - it's up to you. Our favourite Sparkling Shiraz and the quintessential Australian summertime sparkles has to be this wine from Majella. It's so delicious and made for enjoying on a typically hot aussie Christmas Day... or any other day really!

And finally, the classics for those really special occasions. Our Champagne breakfast on Christmas Day is always Moet & Chandon or Pol Roger (or both if we have been really good). These bubbles are both popular with Champagne lovers and everyone has their favourite. Whilst Moet is the world's most recognised Champagne... we secretly fancy Pol just a tiny bit more.

  • Six on the Sixth - Edition #1 22/10/2015

    6 On The 6th

The year is racing away and believe it or not, crazy season is about to begin! So we've decided to keep it super simple and tell you about our "Six on the Sixth" to make your wine shopping easy. Now I know it is not the sixth today... Mrs WP has had a busy few weeks travelling interstate and tasting all of these gorgeous wines and didn'tm anage to update the blog on time!

These are six premium wines, all absolutely delicious and selected by us, at $50 below RRP

    Arras

Firstly, the stunning Tasmanian bubbles from House of Arras. This has quickly become on of our favourite sparklings and has a cult following in the industry. Made by Ed Carr who is a lovely guy and a genius winemaker. We think Arras is on a par with the top Champagne houses in France, delivering a delicious fine sparkle which is perfect for all occasions. If you need any reassurance, just look at the smiles on your guests faces as they take their first sip.

    Vasse Felix Chardonnay

Vasse Felix is a beautiful winery and has a simply amazing restaurant, above the cellar door and overlooking the vines. Their Heytesbury Chardonnay is the flagship, however this is absolutely divine and brilliant value for money given its pedigree. Pop on your over-sized sunnies, order a bottle of Chardy and a little something from the restaurant and let it be known that you are having a marvellous time down South darlings.

    Pierro LTC Semillon Sauvignon Blanc

Pierro is one of our favourite wineries in Margaret River and in fact the world. The cellar door is gorgeous and quaint and the wine is delicious. The Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blend is classic Margaret River and Pierro’s LTC is definitely at the upper end of the scale in terms of fabulousness. Make sure this has a few minutes out of the fridge before serving to really blossom. And serve it with a fancy seafood dish for maximum effect. Love.

    Riposte The Sabre Pinot Noir

Only 'The Best Pinot Noir in Australia' right here ladies and gentlemen. Delicious, winning awards all over the place and with a cool name like 'The Sabre' - this wine has the trifecta. And we love that it is made by a small family team in the Adelaide Hills determined to produce fine wines with an authentic brand.

    Catena Malbec

Winner of the inaugural Wine Please steak night and Malbec taste-off. The Catena has undergone rigorous tasting by the team and we have fallen deeply in love. If you love Malbec skip straight to the food recommendation.  In fact, your steak is probably already on the BBQ. If you’re not a fan of Malbec then don’t expect a Barossa Shiraz, be open to the more understated and savoury flavours… and you’ll have a new BBQ companion.

    Bethany Shiraz

We’ve had the pleasure of enjoying Bethany Shiraz for many years, with a few bottles being tucked away in Dad’s cellar. More recently we’ve been to visit their cellar door and seriously enjoyed the wines on offer. Classic Barossa Shiraz which is perfect by the fire in winter, shared at a BBQ or given as a gift to lovers of this iconic wine region.

And don't forget to subscribe to our email if you'd like our 6 on the 6th update delivered to your inbox -  on time - every month!

  • Red, white, sparkling or fabulous? 21/03/2014

Fabulous Cocktails for a Wine Lovers Wedding

This summer in the McLaren Vale we had the pleasure of hosting a big party, also known as our wedding! Naturally, one of our top priorities was to make sure we served fabulous drinks and in particular, quality wines. The Retreat at Chapel Hill, known for it's delicious McLaren Vale Shiraz, was the perfect vineyard venue with a beautiful terrace, great wines and lots of space for dancing.

    The Retreat

To get the party started we wanted to serve wine-based cocktails in addition to the usual 'red, white or sparkling' on offer. After many evenings of dedicated "research" we decided on two simple cocktails, which would be eye-catching, delicious and easy to serve during the busy reception.

Firstly, we decided to mix up the usual sparkling by alternating every third glass with a Kir Royale. This is the classic blend of Creme de Cassis and Champagne or Sparkling Wine.  Not only does the Kir Royale taste divine, but it's also a stunning violet colour, sparking conversations and smiles across the terrace.

    Kir Royale

    Kir Royale

    (single glass)

    10mL of Creme de Cassis

90mL of Champagne (or sparkling white wine if you like)

To maximise the summer wedding vibe we also served a Red Sangria instead of red wine before sunset. Although it was unseasonably cool and a little bit sprinkly, the Red Sangria was fabulous. Chapel Hill's Tempranillo was the perfect base for the Sangria, as the variety used in the traditional Spanish Rioja and Sangria recipes. We also decided to serve the Tempranillo along with the Shiraz after sunset, with lots of happy guests loving the lighter red option.

    Sangria 2

    Red Sangria

    (6-8 glasses)

    1 bottle of Tempranillo

    100mL Brandy

    500mL Lemonade

4 oranges and 2 lemons peeled and diced

2 apples core removed and diced (not peeled)

2 peaches sliced (when in season)

Garnish with berries or pomegranate seeds

With 'Signature Cocktails' trending in wedding planning blogs across the globe, the Kir Royale and Red Sangria were definitely an understated splash of colour for a summer vineyard wedding ... and boy did they get the party started!

    Cheers!

  • To Speak with a Plumm in your mouth 06/12/2013

Plumm Box      Fancy but not full-of-it wine glasses       Plumm Logo

We are completely in love with the Plumm wine glass range. This Melbourne brand is the first Australian company to make varietal specific wine glasses - you know, the ones that match the type of wine you're drinking. And believe us, it really does improve the smell and flavour of your wine... but how many different shapes do you really need?

We have the entire range of another brand of varietal specific glasses, but do you think we can ever find the 'perfect' one when we go to pour a wine? No. There are millions of them and they're in cupboards all over the house. There is no doubt that a wine tastes so much better out of the right glass, but could this process of finding the right glass whilst our guests wait patiently *thinking we're being total wine ponces* please be a little easier!

Enter Plumm. We've fallen hard for these gorgeous glasses in their beautiful boxes and the fancy but not full-of-it brand personality. Oh and they're Aussie - yay!

"To speak with a plum in your mouth indicates pomp, extravagance and class. To speak with a Plumm in your mouth means simplicity, elegance and glass."

Plumm have worked tirelessly with wine makers, wine judges, sommeliers and wine writers to develop their gorgeous varietal specific glass shapes. And excitingly their research shows that 5 glass types are all you need!

    Plumm Glassware

     - Plumm Glassware in the Wine Store -

In their own words "Plumm crystal wine glasses are functional, practical and beautiful and represent great value for money. They are worthy of any special occasion, yet also allow the enjoyment of premium glassware on a daily basis"

And that is what we're all about at Wine Please, great wine and great glassware as part of your everyday life.

    Cheers! Mr & Mrs WP
