  • Young Gun of Wine... Murdoch Hill's talented Winemaker 04/08/2017

    One of the wineries we've been following closely is  Adelaide Hills winery, Murdoch Hill. And now their winemaker, Michael Downer, has been awarded the Young Gun of Wine Award for 2017.

    We were first introduced to Murdoch Hill wines via a street party in Adelaide a couple of years ago. The wines were impressive and we got to chatting to Andrew Downer, marketing guru at Murdoch Hill and Michael's brother. One thing led to another and a few weeks later we were up in 'the shed' with a group of friends trying their spectacular drops plus barrel samples and chatting all things wine with the brothers. 

    After tying the award for 'Winemakers Choice' in 2015 and winning it outright in 2016, the next logical step was obviously to win the big one...

    Young Gun of Wine in 2017.

    Now we're happy to be ranging our favourites from their list and to be sharing the goodness that is Murdoch Hill with our winelovers! We love these wines and they are highly regarded by the guys from The Wine Front, who we source most of our reviews from, as well as the public with many of the 2016 wines already SOLD OUT!

  • Wines that Love a little Spice 03/11/2015

    With Summer just around the corner it's time to spice things up! Nothing beats a little chilli in a Thai Beef Salad or a Morroccan seasoning with kick on butterflied BBQ lamb. Some may say that finding a wine to suit can be a bit tricky but we have that all taken care of...

    It takes a luscious and aromatic wine to really handle the spice in a dish. Nothing too bold or too high in alcohol or tannins as that will only set your mouth on fire! Not literally but that is how it feels when you drink the wrong wine with spicy food.

    There are both whites and reds that are perfect for mixing with your Mexican, taking out to Thai, or serving with your best arrabiata, all you need to do is decide which wines you'd like to try.

    Here are our favourite wines that can handle a little heat in the kitchen!

    2015.11.10 Spice Things Up

     

    Pewsey Vale Eden Valley Prima Riesling 

    A beautiful delicate Riesling from the famous Pewsey Vale winemakers. The Prima (Donna) is a fabulous Riesling made in a semi-dry style with the grapes harvested earlier than the rest of the Rieslings. We can taste lots of exotic fruits which according to the winemaker include nectarine, lychee, peaches, white cherries and guava. The only thing that is for certain is that there never seems to be enough in the bottle! 

    Yalumba The Virgilius Viognier

    On a bright Spring day we arrived at Yalumba seeking a taste of their flagship Viognier. This fine wine has been given a very dramatic description by the winery... exotic, luscious, opulent, sexy, vivacious and vibrant! In our opinion they're completely correct - it's a seriously seductive white, The Virgilius definitely awoke our senses at the end of a long day of tasting.  It turns out that Yalumba's favourite Viognier is one of our favourites too.

    Bay of Fires Pinot Gris

    Pinot Gris is the 'it' wine right now and this Bay of Fires Pinot Gris is leading the way. Smooth is an understatement with gorgeous melon and peach flavours, wild ferment and a crisp acidity. Blah blah you say. Well then, listen when I say you won't be going back to your Marlborough Sav Blanc after trying this wine.  It's simply too delicious! The perfect wine for a relaxing afternoon in the sun.

    Tamar Ridge Pinot Noir

    Winner of the inaugural Wine Please Tasmanian Pinot Noir blind tasting and one of our favourite wines. The famous Tamar Ridge in Tasmania is the perfect place the grow the fruit to make delicious Pinot Noir wines. Whilst some Pinots can be very expensive... this particular drop provides excellent value for money. And it's really delicious with lots of different foods, in particular those delicious duck pancakes with Hoi Sin sauce. Nom Nom.  

    Riposte The Sabre Pinot Noir

    Only 'The Best Pinot Noir in Australia' right here ladies and gentlemen. Delicious, winning awards all over the place and with a cool name like 'The Sabre' - this wine has the trifecta. And we love that it is made by a small family team in the Adelaide Hills determined to produce fine wines with an authentic brand.

  • Why Have a Wine Gift Registry? 22/10/2015

    We get asked all the time where we came up with the idea for Wine Please so I thought it was time to share the story...

    Chapter 1:   The idea came about when we were still dating... you should note here that only crazy people date and launch businesses together! Anyway, we were enjoying a lovely mini-break together when we started talking about what we wanted out of life. Luckily, we had similar ideas including; we both wanted to be self-employed, work with our passions and travel A LOT. A little later that day Mr WP mentioned his idea for a wine gift registry and we realised that this actually ticked all of the boxes...  After careful consideration (and a bottle of Shiraz) it was agreed that we'd go into business together and work our little butts off to make the idea of Wine Please come to life...

    The initial idea was just for a wine gift registry which we thought would sound something like...

    "Wine Please is a beautifully styled website where couples can create their dream wine list as a wedding registry, providing guests with a simple way to purchase the perfect gift and a unique alternative to a traditional gift registry. It is the perfect way to begin your happily ever after for a pair of wine lovers."

    Chapter 2:   It took one year to build the website, working full time and co-ordinating the construction of a complex website from scratch was in hindsight completely crazy. It was probably better that we had no idea what we were in for before we started! I still have all of the notes and drafts and sketches of the design and will keep these as precious memories. And then, of course we didn't just stick to the plan and added a Wine Store, Gift Shop and Wine Club. Of course we did.  However, against all odds we survived and even better than that...

    by the time www.wineplease.com.au was ready to launch we were ENGAGED!

    It was perfect timing and meant that we were the first couple to create a wine wedding registry. Here's a sneak peek at ours... #flashback

    Our Registry

     

    Chapter 3:   Our wedding was one of the most amazing weekends of our lives. It was great fun and such an incredible experience to be able to spend time with our friends and family who had come from around Australia and across the world. As we all love wine and our wedding was in the McLaren Vale everyone made a weekend of it, visiting the wineries and fabulous restaurants in the lead up to the wedding. It was a gorgeous time of year with the vines abundant with stunning bright green leaves which meant the region and the venue were gorgeous backdrops for our wedding.

    We stayed with our bridal party and family on-site at The Retreat at Chapel Hill where both the ceremony and reception were held which was beautiful. Adrian and I were able to have drinks with everyone and a long table dinner the night before. Then we woke up together and had a great day enjoying the glorious view of the vines whilst we were getting ready for the afternoon ahead!

    Our friends and family loved he website and the fact that they didn’t have to travel with presents. Everyone knows that we’re extremely passionate about wine and said they loved that any wine they chose from our list would be perfect. Of course now get excited about catching up with our beautiful family and friends and opening the delicious wine they bought. It gives us a chance to share our enjoyment of their gift and the memories of the fun wedding weekend we had with them.

     So there you have it... the story of Wine Please

    Hentley Farm was one of the first wineries we spoke to when launching Wine Please and boy are we glad they said yes! We have loved their wines since your very first sip. They are the hottest Australian winery according to us... and now Mr James Halliday too.     This boutique winery is set in Seppeltsfield and makes a number of gorgeous wines from their 150 acre block.     The Stray Mongrel GSZ, an award-winning blend of Grenache, Shiraz and Zinfandel is also  just $25 and also divine. A classic Barossa Grenache / Shiraz blend with Zinfandel. Chocolate, earth, fruit and spice. It's developing a cult following!

  • Our day on the Barossa Valley Cheese and Wine Trail 02/05/2014

    It was a beautiful sunny day just before the chill kicked in and we decided we would head up to the Barossa Valley to spend a day on a Barossa cheese and wine trail. Our first stop was the The Barossa Valley Cheese Co to pick up their trail map and some delicious supplies for the day. The map is fantastic, with four trails of wineries to choose from in North, South, East and West directions. The cheese pack is a functional little cooler bag bursting with four cheeses, a cheese knife, crackers and even a gorgeous little cheeseboard. Once we had our map and cheese we set off to find our first winery of the day.

    We decided not to stick to any one trail as all of the wineries are really close together and we had a few that we particularly wanted to visit. These were; Two Hands Wines, Seppeltsfield, Langmeil and Peter Lehmann Wines.

    At each of the wineries the Barossa Valley Cheese Co have chosen a wine and then carefully selected a cheese which perfectly complements that wine. And they have done a fantastic job creating flavour matches which are surprising and delicious.

     At Two Hands Wines the Brilliant Disguise Moscato was a slightly sweet and spritzy wine, matched with a Vache Curd - a cow's milk curd that is subtle, creamy and soft. It was a  very morish match we didn't expect and a fantastic start to the day. If you're a Moscato drinker definitely try a subtle curd with your tipple next time - it's amazing!

    Our next stop was the Seppeltsfield winery where we were recommended to sample the Solero DP38 Rich Rare Venerable, which is a medium 'sherry', matched with the Cheddar. We are major sherry fans and this was an absolutely wicked pairing. There was definitely no DP38 left after the tasting and we almost ate the entire piece of cheddar! 

    Two Hands and Seppeltsfield Trail

    Langmeil is one of our all time favourite wineries and we sell lots of gorgeous Langmeil wines here at Wine Please. It was such a great experience to spend some time at the cellar door, perched up at the tasting bar with our little cheese board and cheese. The chosen wine was the High Road Chardonnay matched with a creamy Camembert. Needless to say that was not the last wine we tried there, with the 2012 Valley Floor Shiraz just released (it's amazing!) and a number of aged Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignons open just by chance... we love our job!

    The final stop was Peter Lehmann Wines where there are so many wines to try. We started with the cheese and wine match and then moved on to try more of their wines. Our favourites were the Peter Lehmann H&V Chardonnay and H&V Sauvignon Blanc which were promptly added to our range here at Wine Please. To top off our day the Peter Lehmann Stonewell Shiraz was also available for tasting and was the perfect end to a fun day on the trail. 

    Barossa -wine -and -cheese

    This was a really fun way to structure a trip around the Barossa and it was a fantastic talking point as we popped our cheeseboard up on the tasting bench and enjoyed a little cheese with our wines. I can't believe we didn't think to do it before really. The wineries love it too and give you 'extra' sized tastings of the wines that are matched with the cheese. We found the service at all of the wineries to be exceptional and they definitely took extra special care of us because we were on the trail. We highly recommend the Barossa Valley Cheese Co cheese and wine trail to anyone who loves visiting cellar doors, drinking wine and eating cheese. Which is everyone we know!

  • Red, white, sparkling or fabulous? 21/03/2014

    Fabulous Cocktails for a Wine Lovers Wedding

    This summer in the McLaren Vale we had the pleasure of hosting a big party, also known as our wedding! Naturally, one of our top priorities was to make sure we served fabulous drinks and in particular, quality wines. The Retreat at Chapel Hill, known for it's delicious McLaren Vale Shiraz, was the perfect vineyard venue with a beautiful terrace, great wines and lots of space for dancing.

    To get the party started we wanted to serve wine-based cocktails in addition to the usual 'red, white or sparkling' on offer. After many evenings of dedicated "research" we decided on two simple cocktails, which would be eye-catching, delicious and easy to serve during the busy reception. 

    Firstly, we decided to mix up the usual sparkling by alternating every third glass with a Kir Royale. This is the classic blend of Creme de Cassis and Champagne or Sparkling Wine.  Not only does the Kir Royale taste divine, but it's also a stunning violet colour, sparking conversations and smiles across the terrace.

    10mL of Creme de Cassis 

    90mL of Champagne (or sparkling white wine if you like)

     

    To maximise the summer wedding vibe we also served a Red Sangria instead of red wine before sunset. Although it was unseasonably cool and a little bit sprinkly, the Red Sangria was fabulous. Chapel Hill's Tempranillo was the perfect base for the Sangria, as the variety used in the traditional Spanish Rioja and Sangria recipes. We also decided to serve the Tempranillo along with the Shiraz after sunset, with lots of happy guests loving the lighter red option.

    (6-8 glasses)

    1 bottle of Tempranillo

    100mL Brandy

    500mL Lemonade

    4 oranges and 2 lemons peeled and diced

    2 apples core removed and diced (not peeled)

    2 peaches sliced (when in season)

    Garnish with berries or pomegranate seeds


    With 'Signature Cocktails' trending in wedding planning blogs across the globe, the Kir Royale and Red Sangria were definitely an understated splash of colour for a summer vineyard wedding ... and boy did they get the party started!

  • Big Bold Beautiful: Barossa Shiraz 13/03/2014

    The Barossa Shiraz Wine Club was sort of like the biggest Christmas present under the tree for us. We slowly opened a few others first, such as the Coonawarra Cab Sav and the Margaret River Chardonnay... prolonging the excitement of the most anticipated Wine Club ever. Finally it was time to get together and blind-taste everyone's favourite representation of Australia's most famous variety... the mighty Barossa Shiraz!

    Barossa is the 'spiritual home' of Shiraz according to many reports, a variety which is known as Syrah in other parts of the world. The Barossa interpretation is famously full-bodied, powerful and renowned for intense flavours including berries, chocolate, coffee and black pepper. The Barossa region has some of the oldest vines in the world and a formalised Vine Charter to preserve and promote the vines of this very special wine region. 

    Mr WP along with most other members of the Wine Club on this occasion were South Australians, with a long-term love affair with Barossa Shiraz. Mrs WP and one other Wine Club member were from Margaret River and the Bellarine, not locals but winos with a serious crush on this infamous variety.

    We attend various formal 'industry' tastings but relish Wine Club with our friends as a place where we can taste and chat about the wines and then merrily eat a delicious meal prepared by the hosts. As per Wine Club rules, everyone brought a bottle and the complex and entertaining kitchen ritual of labelling, pouring and serving the wines was conducted in order to make sure nobody knew which wine belonged to who. Various lengthly email discussions had taken place during the weeks preceding regarding price ranges, specific sub-regions etc. and it was agreed that bottles $30-$50 retail would be included with no sub-region rules. 

    A seriously fun, and seriously serious tasting took place prior to the BBQ lunch and everyone scored the wines in order of preference. The votes were tallied and after some heckling (this is a fun club and yes, we are all mates) a winner was finally announced... 

    Winner: Grant Burge Filsell

    This is a spectacular Barossa Old Vine Shiraz and winner of the inaugural Wine Please Barossa Shiraz blind tasting. The Filsell has been named "The World's Greatest Shiraz" by Winestate Magazine. It is smooth, fruity and dark - drinking superbly now and for the next 10 years. We all agreed that this is a special occasion wine without the price tag, meaning we can enjoy it more often and afford to put a few bottles in the cellar to age.

    There was further (and much louder) heckling when it was discovered that the McLaren Vale Shiraz that some distracted members had brought in had come second. Although one person had announced during the blind tasting that the wine tasted nothing like a Barossa Shiraz - well spotted! 

    The BBQ was also delicious and it was a superb way to spend a Sunday afternoon with friends.

  • A Delicious Recipe with Wine 04/12/2013

    It's a 'wine fact' that we cook better when there is a little bit of wine in the dish, and a little bit in our glass

    The other night, Mrs WP came across an old recipe for Moules Marinieres... a favourite dish discovered on holiday in France. There is always* some white wine in the house and a there happened to be some seafood in the fridge that needed to be cooked. One can't argue with this sort of fate, not even if calories are being counted pre-wedding.

    It turned out to be a slightly modified version- Seafood Marinieres we will call it - and it was absolutely delicious. So delicious that it would be completely unfair not to share the recipe with you. It's easy, it involves seafood and wine and it is bound to impress anyone who you might be willing to share it with! 

    Seafood Marinieres (for 2)

    (you can make it with just mussels and call it Moules Marinieres if you like)

    Gather the following:

    1 bottle** of white wine - we recommend Riesling

    1kg scrubbed and de-bearded mussels

    Any other white fish chopped into cubes, prawns or scallops that you have in the fridge

    50g butter cut into 2 x 25g pieces

    1/2 cup of cream

    2 brown shallots diced finely

    1 cup of fresh parsley chopped

    1 bay leaf

    1 sprig of thyme

    Freshly ground salt and pepper

    Crusty bread or freshly cooked spaghetti to serve

    And then...

    1) Pour yourself a glass of wine

    2) Heat 25g of butter in a large frying pan (one with a matching lid) and add the shallots, half of the parsley, the thyme, the bay leaf and a good cracking of salt and pepper as well as 100mL of the wine

    3) Cook the 'other' seafood until it is half way to being ready and then add the mussels and another 100mL of white wine

    4) Hold the lid on firmly and shake the pan vigorously making sure the liquid moves over all of the seafood

    5) Shop shaking the pan and have a sip of wine, that is the hard bit done.

    6) As the mussels open remove them from the pan along with the cooked seafood pieces, and place them straight into serving bowls

    7) Once you have removed all of the seafood, strain the pan juices and bits through a seive and put the liquid back into the pan.

    8) Bring the liquid to a simmer and add the other half of the parsley and remaining butter. Once the butter is melted, reduce the temperature and stir in the cream.

    9) Pour this delicious sauce over the seafood and serve immediately with a fresh glass of wine and some crusty bread or fresh spaghetti.

  • A Day in the Barossa 03/11/2013

    One of the best parts of our jobs as Mr and Mrs WP is travelling to taste wines. We get to see the beautiful vineyards, meet the makers of our amazing wines and chat to the people at the cellar door. Our first 'Wine Tour' follows in the footsteps of the trip we took just a few weeks ago around the Barossa Valley in South Australia. It was a fantastic day and we managed to squeeze in 5 awesome wineries. It was the beginning of the new season and the bud burst was so cool to see.

    If you're headed to the Barossa we've included a map and the details of the wineries we visited below. We have also included the details of a few other great Barossa cellar doors nearby which you should visit if you have time.

    We started the day at Kellermeister (A) who make delicious wines including a mouth-watering Black Sash Shiraz, a Rascally Rabbit Rose and a delicious Eiswein (ice wine) which we have since featured in our store. Delicious.

    We then continued down the road to Rockford (B) who have a gorgeous rustic cellar door and some amazing wines which they sell direct to visitors. Our third stop was at Artisans of Barossa (C) which you really have to see to believe. It's a shared cellar door for 7 different wineries in the Barossa with a fantastic cafe overlooking the vines. We feature the wines from Teusner and Sons of Eden on our list which are absolutely yum. 

    Barossa-Wine-Tour

    The afternoon was spent at Hentley Farm (D) where Danny and the team have a stunning cellar door and an award-winning restaurant. We sat in the gorgeous lounge room and tasted the range of wines being produced by this boutique, single-estate winery. The Beauty and The Beast are absolute knockouts and we can't get enough of their Cab Sav and Shiraz as the BBQ season kicks off. 

    Our final stop was at Yalumba (E) where we tasted a range of Viognier wines with the Virgilius really tickling our fancy. Straight to the store! Yalumba also do a range of magnificent reds including arguably the best Cabernet/Shiraz blend in Australia, the Signature, which is one of Mr WPs favourite wines of all time. 

    An epic day of wine tasting and a great result for us with a bunch of delicious wines to add to the Wine Store.
