Fabulous Cocktails for a Wine Lovers Wedding

This summer in the McLaren Vale we had the pleasure of hosting a big party, also known as our wedding! Naturally, one of our top priorities was to make sure we served fabulous drinks and in particular, quality wines. The Retreat at Chapel Hill, known for it's delicious McLaren Vale Shiraz, was the perfect vineyard venue with a beautiful terrace, great wines and lots of space for dancing.

    The Retreat

To get the party started we wanted to serve wine-based cocktails in addition to the usual 'red, white or sparkling' on offer. After many evenings of dedicated "research" we decided on two simple cocktails, which would be eye-catching, delicious and easy to serve during the busy reception.

Firstly, we decided to mix up the usual sparkling by alternating every third glass with a Kir Royale. This is the classic blend of Creme de Cassis and Champagne or Sparkling Wine.  Not only does the Kir Royale taste divine, but it's also a stunning violet colour, sparking conversations and smiles across the terrace.

    Kir Royale

    Kir Royale

    (single glass)

    10mL of Creme de Cassis

90mL of Champagne (or sparkling white wine if you like)

To maximise the summer wedding vibe we also served a Red Sangria instead of red wine before sunset. Although it was unseasonably cool and a little bit sprinkly, the Red Sangria was fabulous. Chapel Hill's Tempranillo was the perfect base for the Sangria, as the variety used in the traditional Spanish Rioja and Sangria recipes. We also decided to serve the Tempranillo along with the Shiraz after sunset, with lots of happy guests loving the lighter red option.

    Sangria 2

    Red Sangria

    (6-8 glasses)

    1 bottle of Tempranillo

    100mL Brandy

    500mL Lemonade

4 oranges and 2 lemons peeled and diced

2 apples core removed and diced (not peeled)

2 peaches sliced (when in season)

Garnish with berries or pomegranate seeds

With 'Signature Cocktails' trending in wedding planning blogs across the globe, the Kir Royale and Red Sangria were definitely an understated splash of colour for a summer vineyard wedding ... and boy did they get the party started!

    Cheers!

  • Stonier International Pinot Noir Tasting (SIPNOT) 29/10/2013

Wine Please were lucky enough to attend the fourteenth Stonier International Pinot Noir Tasting event in Sydney last night. The event was hosted by Stonier Wines at the MCA in Sydney and 'The Wine Man' himself, Peter Bourne, was the MC.

The setting with Huon Hooke and Peter Bourne

    SIPNOT Room

It was a fantastic event showcasing 12 of the world's finest Pinot Noir wines in a blind tasting. Each table consisted of 6- 8 people and a 'Wine Expert'. We were lucky enough to be seated next to our expert, Mr Ken Gargett, Wine Writer and great bloke.

We were delighted by the peeps on our table who were from the Mornington Peninsula and soon discovered that every person and every table had completely different opinions on the wines. Everyone's opinion was valid - nobody was wrong and everyone was right -  which is exactly how we like to approach wine.

We were encouraged to taste in silence the six wines in each bracket and then discuss and rank the wines as a table. Ken opted for the voting system which meant that we didn't have to convince each other of the merits of each wine and could relax and chat about wine some more (in a totally non-wanky way). The wines were then discussed by representatives from a few tables followed by the panel including James Halliday AM, Huon Hooke and Mike Symons.

Our highlights for the night were the following wines:

    • 2011 Dawson & James Pinot Noir
    • 2011 Stonier KBS Vineyard Pinot Noir
    • 2010 Domaine Robert Groffier Chambolle-Musigny, Les Sentiers
    • 2011 Mt Difficulty Long Gully Pinot Noir
    • 2010 Flowers Sea View Ridge Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir
    • 2010 Domaine Jean Grivot Nuits St Georges, Les Pruliers
    • 2010 Williams Selyem Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

We can't wait for next year!

Thanks to Ken Gargett, Stonier Wines and our new friends from Mornington Peninsula for a fabulous night.
