    Hentley Farm was one of the first wineries we spoke to when launching Wine Please and boy are we glad they said yes! We have loved their wines since your very first sip. They are the hottest Australian winery according to us... and now Mr James Halliday too. If you haven't heard about this spectacular label and their award winning, single estate wines then you really need to catch up.

    This boutique winery is set in Seppeltsfield and makes a number of gorgeous wines from their 150 acre block. And this year they have been announced as Mr Halliday's 'Winery of the Year for 2015' catapulting them to the top of the hot list. Our customers have been snapping up their wines all year and it's clear to see (and taste) why. 

    All of their wines are delicious but we have a few favourites. In particular we think that their Hentley Farm Shiraz at $25 per bottle is fantastic value. The little brother to 'The Beast' is a mouthful of fruity, smooth, Barossa Shiraz that you will love. 

    The Stray Mongrel GSZ, an award-winning blend of Grenache, Shiraz and Zinfandel is also  just $25 and also divine. A classic Barossa Grenache / Shiraz blend with Zinfandel. Chocolate, earth, fruit and spice. It's developing a cult following!

  • Our day on the Barossa Valley Cheese and Wine Trail 02/05/2014

    Barossa Valley Cheese Co

    It was a beautiful sunny day just before the chill kicked in and we decided we would head up to the Barossa Valley to spend a day on a Barossa cheese and wine trail. Our first stop was the The Barossa Valley Cheese Co to pick up their trail map and some delicious supplies for the day. The map is fantastic, with four trails of wineries to choose from in North, South, East and West directions. The cheese pack is a functional little cooler bag bursting with four cheeses, a cheese knife, crackers and even a gorgeous little cheeseboard. Once we had our map and cheese we set off to find our first winery of the day.

    We decided not to stick to any one trail as all of the wineries are really close together and we had a few that we particularly wanted to visit. These were; Two Hands Wines, Seppeltsfield, Langmeil and Peter Lehmann Wines.

    At each of the wineries the Barossa Valley Cheese Co have chosen a wine and then carefully selected a cheese which perfectly complements that wine. And they have done a fantastic job creating flavour matches which are surprising and delicious.

     At Two Hands Wines the Brilliant Disguise Moscato was a slightly sweet and spritzy wine, matched with a Vache Curd - a cow's milk curd that is subtle, creamy and soft. It was a  very morish match we didn't expect and a fantastic start to the day. If you're a Moscato drinker definitely try a subtle curd with your tipple next time - it's amazing!

    Our next stop was the Seppeltsfield winery where we were recommended to sample the Solero DP38 Rich Rare Venerable, which is a medium 'sherry', matched with the Cheddar. We are major sherry fans and this was an absolutely wicked pairing. There was definitely no DP38 left after the tasting and we almost ate the entire piece of cheddar!

    Langmeil is one of our all time favourite wineries and we sell lots of gorgeous Langmeil wines here at Wine Please. It was such a great experience to spend some time at the cellar door, perched up at the tasting bar with our little cheese board and cheese. The chosen wine was the High Road Chardonnay matched with a creamy Camembert. Needless to say that was not the last wine we tried there, with the 2012 Valley Floor Shiraz just released (it's amazing!) and a number of aged Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignons open just by chance... we love our job!

    The final stop was Peter Lehmann Wines where there are so many wines to try. We started with the cheese and wine match and then moved on to try more of their wines. Our favourites were the Peter Lehmann H&V Chardonnay and H&V Sauvignon Blanc which were promptly added to our range here at Wine Please. To top off our day the Peter Lehmann Stonewell Shiraz was also available for tasting and was the perfect end to a fun day on the trail.

    This was a really fun way to structure a trip around the Barossa and it was a fantastic talking point as we popped our cheeseboard up on the tasting bench and enjoyed a little cheese with our wines. I can't believe we didn't think to do it before really. The wineries love it too and give you 'extra' sized tastings of the wines that are matched with the cheese. We found the service at all of the wineries to be exceptional and they definitely took extra special care of us because we were on the trail. We highly recommend the Barossa Valley Cheese Co cheese and wine trail to anyone who loves visiting cellar doors, drinking wine and eating cheese. Which is everyone we know!

  • Red, white, sparkling or fabulous? 21/03/2014

    Fabulous Cocktails for a Wine Lovers Wedding

    This summer in the McLaren Vale we had the pleasure of hosting a big party, also known as our wedding! Naturally, one of our top priorities was to make sure we served fabulous drinks and in particular, quality wines. The Retreat at Chapel Hill, known for it's delicious McLaren Vale Shiraz, was the perfect vineyard venue with a beautiful terrace, great wines and lots of space for dancing.

    To get the party started we wanted to serve wine-based cocktails in addition to the usual 'red, white or sparkling' on offer. After many evenings of dedicated "research" we decided on two simple cocktails, which would be eye-catching, delicious and easy to serve during the busy reception. 

    Firstly, we decided to mix up the usual sparkling by alternating every third glass with a Kir Royale. This is the classic blend of Creme de Cassis and Champagne or Sparkling Wine.  Not only does the Kir Royale taste divine, but it's also a stunning violet colour, sparking conversations and smiles across the terrace.

    10mL of Creme de Cassis 

    90mL of Champagne (or sparkling white wine if you like)

     

    To maximise the summer wedding vibe we also served a Red Sangria instead of red wine before sunset. Although it was unseasonably cool and a little bit sprinkly, the Red Sangria was fabulous. Chapel Hill's Tempranillo was the perfect base for the Sangria, as the variety used in the traditional Spanish Rioja and Sangria recipes. We also decided to serve the Tempranillo along with the Shiraz after sunset, with lots of happy guests loving the lighter red option.

    (6-8 glasses)

    1 bottle of Tempranillo

    100mL Brandy

    500mL Lemonade

    4 oranges and 2 lemons peeled and diced

    2 apples core removed and diced (not peeled)

    2 peaches sliced (when in season)

    Garnish with berries or pomegranate seeds


    With 'Signature Cocktails' trending in wedding planning blogs across the globe, the Kir Royale and Red Sangria were definitely an understated splash of colour for a summer vineyard wedding ... and boy did they get the party started!

  • A Day in the Barossa 03/11/2013

    One of the best parts of our jobs as Mr and Mrs WP is travelling to taste wines. We get to see the beautiful vineyards, meet the makers of our amazing wines and chat to the people at the cellar door. Our first 'Wine Tour' follows in the footsteps of the trip we took just a few weeks ago around the Barossa Valley in South Australia. It was a fantastic day and we managed to squeeze in 5 awesome wineries. It was the beginning of the new season and the bud burst was so cool to see.

    If you're headed to the Barossa we've included a map and the details of the wineries we visited below. We have also included the details of a few other great Barossa cellar doors nearby which you should visit if you have time.

    We started the day at Kellermeister (A) who make delicious wines including a mouth-watering Black Sash Shiraz, a Rascally Rabbit Rose and a delicious Eiswein (ice wine) which we have since featured in our store. Delicious.

    We then continued down the road to Rockford (B) who have a gorgeous rustic cellar door and some amazing wines which they sell direct to visitors. Our third stop was at Artisans of Barossa (C) which you really have to see to believe. It's a shared cellar door for 7 different wineries in the Barossa with a fantastic cafe overlooking the vines. We feature the wines from Teusner and Sons of Eden on our list which are absolutely yum.

    The afternoon was spent at Hentley Farm (D) where Danny and the team have a stunning cellar door and an award-winning restaurant. We sat in the gorgeous lounge room and tasted the range of wines being produced by this boutique, single-estate winery. The Beauty and The Beast are absolute knockouts and we can't get enough of their Cab Sav and Shiraz as the BBQ season kicks off. 

    Our final stop was at Yalumba (E) where we tasted a range of Viognier wines with the Virgilius really tickling our fancy. Straight to the store! Yalumba also do a range of magnificent reds including arguably the best Cabernet/Shiraz blend in Australia, the Signature, which is one of Mr WPs favourite wines of all time. 

    An epic day of wine tasting and a great result for us with a bunch of delicious wines to add to the Wine Store.
